Mesothelioma UK: Making Patients’ Experience Count

We’re delighted to support our long-term partner Mesothelioma UK to conduct extensive patient research into understanding what it is really like to have mesothelioma, to enable the charity to focus on what matters most to people living with mesothelioma.

Your Health Companion will be used to capture real-world patient experience from patients across the country, of what it is like to be diagnosed, be living with and treated or cared for if you have mesothelioma in the UK. Looking at three key areas Your Health Companion m provides insight into, patient experience of care and treatment, quality of life and individual clinical management of mesothelioma.

Feedback collected will be used to help the charity develop priorities and shape services going forward. Crucially, output from projects such as these include resources and recommendations for healthcare professionals and services - directly benefiting people affected by mesothelioma.

Our partnership with Mesothelioma UK spans over 5 years, and throughout this time we continue to support patients to live well for longer, by providing a way for them to track their symptoms, side effects, quality of life and more in a central, secure place. Many patients are already using Your Health Companion to help them feel more in control and happier that they are getting the care they need.

Helpful and easy to use. (Your Health Companion) Enables me to see how cancer is affecting me and chart my ups and downs.” Said a patient-user from the Midlands.

Nurses are also finding the benefits, including driving efficiencies in clinical appointments and making a real difference to how they can help patients better.

This research is part of a long-term strategy to improve research, improve patients’ quality of life and drive change. As patients use Your Health Companion to track their condition, the platform captures real-world evidence using validated Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs) and Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs). These represent the patients view and opinions of how they are feeling and the care they receive. By collecting data from a large (anonymous) population that, when used together with treatment data and clinical trials, provides opportunities for dramatically improving research into new cancer medicines, treatments and NHS care services for this specific group of patients.

This is a game changer. It ensures we get continuous, accurate feedback directly from patients. This will accelerate our ability to drive progress in the services and treatments we can offer. We can make value-based decisions efficiently and effectively.” Liz Darlison, MBE EN RN BSc MSc, Chief Executive Officer, Mesothelioma UK.
